Practical ways to help your child start school with less worry and more confidence.

Getting Back To School Ready

The first day of school can bring big feelings, whether your child is starting daycare, preschool, or returning to a program. Even experienced students often need extra attention during those first days and weeks. There is always room for practice and preparation. Try a few of these ideas in the weeks before school starts, and see what works best for your child.

Read Books:

Reading books together is a simple way to start a conversation about school and learn how your child is feeling. Choose stories about classrooms, teachers, and making friends. Ask your child what they notice in the pictures. You can also find read-aloud books online to listen to together before the first day.

Practice the Routine:

Getting back into a morning routine takes practice. Let your child practice dressing, undressing, and hand-washing on their own. These small tasks help them feel confident when a teacher asks them to do the same at school. A visual checklist can make the steps easier to remember.

Work Together Preparing Lunches/Snacks:

Whether your child is going back to school or learning from home, there are many kid-friendly recipes to try, even for picky eaters. Shop for ingredients together. Let your child help make and pack their lunch or snack. They get excited about eating what they helped prepare.

Have Supplies Ready:

Back-to-school shopping does not have to be expensive. Start with the basics: a lunchbox, a pencil box, a backpack, and a first-day outfit. Let your child help choose their supplies. They will be proud to show their new things to friends.

Set Goals for the Year:

Sit down with your child and talk about what they would like to accomplish this year. A goal might be making a new friend, learning to write their name, or trying a new food at lunch. You may learn about new interests you can support at home. Above all, keep the preparation fun.

What this looks like in practice

In a licensed child-care setting, the first days of school are paced gently. Teachers greet each child by name. They show children where to put their bag and where to sit. Children learn the daily rhythm through songs, books, and play. Parents can expect extra attention for their child during the first days and weeks.

Change can bring a flood of emotions for children and adults. A child who knows what to expect walks into the room with more confidence. Practicing the morning routine at home makes drop-off smoother. Reading about school at home gives your child words for their feelings. These small steps help the whole family settle in.
